The difference between an ointment and a cream is in the structure and proportion of ingredients in them, which affects the subsequent use and benefits. Ointments contain more oils (up to 80% oils/active ingredients and 20% water), while creams usually contain the same proportion of both (up to 50% oils/active ingredients and 50% water). Because they contain more water, creams are easier to spread. Creams are less greasy due to the higher proportion of water, but they are also easier to wash off and mostly only protect the outer layer of the skin.
